West Virginia and Virginia (September 24th through October 4th)

We made plans to go out with friends in Richmond, Virginia the weekend of September 30th, so we spent the next week making our way from Kentucky.  Our first night, we found St. Albans Roadside Park outside of Charleston, West Virginia.  Even though the site was right on the river, had full hook-up and FREE, we decided to only stay one night.  When we thought it couldn't get better, we were treated to an awesome sunset.

The next day, we drove to Stony Fork Campground outside of Wytheville, VA.  The campground was situated in Jefferson National Forest and only cost $12 a night for water/electric.  Fall was in the air as the weather dipped below 80, and the leaves were just starting to turn.  Since the weather was so nice, and the temperature was ideal, we decided to stay two nights.

The next night, we made an overnight stop in Roanoke.  There were no RV parks nearby, so we called Camping World as most RV dealerships have slots available for overnight stays.  They suggested that we dry camp at Gander Mountain as it had just closed. Even though it was right on I-81, the road noise did not keep us up; however, the low was in the high 60s, making it difficult to sleep.

The next night, we stayed at Pickett RV Park in Blackstone, VA.  Interestingly enough, this park was inside of a military base but was owned by the county.  Because of this collaboration, nightly rates are $11 for full hookup.  We've never felt safer!

The next day, we made our way to Charles City, VA, just outside of Richmond.  We found a host on Boondockers Welcome that had a vacant 12 acre lot in a wooded area.  We stayed for free for three nights.  While in the area, we drove to Jamestown, the first permanent English settlement in America. We also explored Belle Isle, a small oasis in the middle of downtown Richmond and Saturday night, we had dinner with friends. Both of us were really impressed with Richmond, and it's on the list for places to settle after our trip.

After Richmond, we went to Virginia Beach and stayed at First Landing State Park.  At $44/night, this was the most expensive park we've stayed at, but our proximity to the beach was worth it.  The weather was low to mid 70s which made for two perfect beach days. They even allowed dogs on the beach, and Lambeau basked in the sun alongside us.

You can see our camper in the left of the photo.  It was an easy walk to the beach.
